Kermode & Mayo's Extra Takes (2022-05-12)
Films:
The Drover’s Wife (2021). Retelling of a famous Australian story with a focus on Indigenous characters. Sounds great, perhaps not released in the US yet.
The Quiet Girl (2021). Irish. Described as ‘lovely’, ‘sublime’ and ‘absolutely beautiful’. Joint FOTW.
Dog (2022). Apparently this is good?
Vortex (2022). Long, poignant, difficult French film about dementia. Sounds like a tough watch.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022). Cineliterate, inventive action romp that 'only works if you are emotionally engaged'. Joint FOTW.
TV shows:
- I watched the first two episodes of The Essex Serpent (2022) and honestly they were rubbish. It just feels heavy handed. I agree that Clare Danes' performance seems fragile whereas Hiddleston does a fine job. Mark suggests that the show gets more interesting after the mass-hysteria event, which is the last thing I saw, but to be honest I can't see myself sticking with it.
Stray observations:
- Another nice idiom: reductio ad absurdum.
